Default Mia 6 mos

I'm certainly no professional photographer. I just like to take nice pics of my family etc. This is a pic of my daughter Mia - she is 6 months. I liked the photo better when I changed it to black and white, but it's still not true B&W. Here is what I would like help with:

1) How do you get the whites to be white and backs black? This is more gray than black and white.

2) The focus part was on her eyes - or at least I thought it was, but it looks like the bottom right hand corner is where it's most in focus.

3) It still seems to be flat. How do you fix that?

I also do not have a raw file converter, so all of my pics are in jpeg and am at the mercy of jpeg PP.

Thanks for your help!

The focus problem could be the very slow shutter speed...it is way hard to handhold 1/20, especially when shooting children. Also the photo is very underexposed which is likely causing the muddy look.

Thank you for your reply. I'll adjust the exposure. I always end up with underexposed pics.....something I definitely need to work on!
Thanks again.
