Toning

I'm looking for your feedback of these 2 same shot below with different toning, which one do you prefer?

I like the idea behind the toning. I think it helps the photo, what I think is lost is the detail in the black garb. I would try actually lightening the tone of the black garb to try and pull some detail into it. (A bit of highlighting and shadows from the folds in the garment just to add some detail to the person). With photo number two, it almost appears as if a person-shaped hole has been cut out of the photo.

Alas, just my opinion.
