Default My first critique since I came back!

Just playing around with my cousin working with outdoor OCF, which is one of my goals for this year. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Looks like you had your flash straight on to her. The lighting is pretty flat and a bit harsh. If you reshoot, try putting your flash more at an angle to her to give some shadows and depth, and powering it down a bit. What OCF are you using, and with what modifier(s)?

ETA: Can you also post your EXIF?

The flash was to camera left, and since all my equipment was not with me (it was spur of the moment) i was using my Gary Fong diffuser. It was a bit high I believe, causing her to be somewhat washed out.

Exposure 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 48 mm
ISO Speed 200
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash On, Return not detected
Exposure Mode Manual
White Balance Manual

Thanks for the EXIF.

I'd move the flash even more to the side, then. It really does look pretty straight-on, especially judging by the centered catchlights. I'd love to see what you can do with your usual equipment!

Very pretty girl, BTW.

Thank you! I'm trying to push myself to get out there and practice with it all, but it's been so cold I just want to hide inside. LOL!

LOL I hear you! Half the reason I invested in studio equipment was so I could avoid going outside, haha! I sit here typing as the snow is furiously falling outside, dreading that I have to go out to pick my daughter up in a few minutes....sigh....

I'm trying lol. I took this next one too, and have realized that my main problem is that I've been a natural light fan for SO long, that I actually don't know what exactly I'm trying to achieve! That's why I drag my cousin out for practice.

Same equipment as before. :P

I agree...lighting is WAAAAY to harsh and it does still seem as though it is right in front of her instead of off the camera.

For the second shot...try pulling her away from the wall to give it some depth as well. Great job of focus and she is a cute girl.
