in all honesty, I would have picked serene to describe her face had you not said she was in a bad mood. I think it's great, portraits that always show happy smiley people almost always feel like a lie to me.

I would suggest trying to get her further away from the background if you were to do this again, it will allow for better separation in exposure between the subject and the background, and allow for more contrast.

i like it quite a bit- it's not particularly interesting or, as the pp said, reflective of real life, for every portrait to show a big cheesy grin. i wish she was looking into the picture and not out of it, but other than that, i'd say its a keeper.

not sure if this interests you or not, but recently i've been trying to get a range of expressions on one kid in the same setting, so that i can make a collage page in our 2010 wrap up family pics book. i saw someone post something like that here- probably under SYS and maybe it was steve bowman- i forget- but it was a toddler- about 6-8 different shots all within minutes of each other and arranged on the page.

anyway, hth.

Thank You for the comments ... when I try to take pictures of her, she squints her eyes and gives me this big cheesy grin and can't relax ... so with this photo..she was stomping and storming around her room and I just opened the door and snapped a couple shots ...

Have you shown this to her yet? Kids are not the easiest of subjects but that is not their problem but ours (the photographer), right? Child photographers are trying to capture the essense of that time, of that child, and people can see when it's contrived.

My thinking is to show her what she looks like, and eventually either (a) she will recoginize the opportunity and will try to control the pose or (b) you will accept that the best pictures of her are done when she's not aware of who's holding the camera

i think i agree about how different this is - capturing a different mood rather than the cliche happy one
if i were to critisize id say that im not a big fan of the perspective used and its a bit too airbrushed
her face lost that natural texture and looks a bit plastic
other than that, its a nice shot
