Default What do you think of the colors? toddler portrait

DSC_0730_2010-12-19_08-54

different light sources is part of the problem, clearly, but i keep tinkering and can't get it right. thanks for any ideas- also, do the lips look too pink? i think it's actually accurate. TIA

exif data:
nikon d5000
aperture 5.0
shutter speed 1/20
iso 1250
focal length 75 mm

ps i'm aware that the softness is likely due to too slow of a shutter speed wtih that focal length. trying to stick with natural light...

Hi kristen, i really like this shot... hope you dont mind me giving a bit of pp shot at it... fixing from 2 wb sources are pretty simple since i do this quite a bit before... but then again i'm using an uncalibrated monitor... if you mind i'll take it down... it's on private in flickr so no one but here will see these photos... great expression..

tweak wb by opening in ps4 as raw... overlay tweaked pict on top of original, and brush with 30% opacity to taste... i use the original for the backdrop and a bit of the right hand (or is it suppose to be her left hand) and the hair since i find those areas are fine in original... i like warm tones for ppl shots so maybe i overdid it, but you should get the idea... take me less than 3 mins to do all this.. oh and sorry i meant to keep the lips since you say it's accurate (and you should know best) but i forgot to brush it out

if all else fail, go b&w... but personally i like the colour version better, and this b&w is definitely less than ideal on the left side since it's a bit too bright for my taste... but lunch break is over so..

nice shot again!

hi kristenh, here is what i did. made a blank layer and with the eyedropper tool click on the skin color that is not tinted with cyan. with a soft brush, set to 10% opacity, brush over the skin with a different color balance till the cyan cast is covered. if you find it to much, reduce the layer opacity. i also brightened the bg and removed the folds. merged layers and i duplicated the layer again and applied gaussian blur, then reduced the layer opacity and with layer mask, i brushed the eyes to reveal the sharper layer and flattened.

thank you both for taking the time to play with this photo. i must remember to turn off the light when i take his picture on this bed- there's a big window to the left.

ed, you know i like your pping work and this is really nice- i like how the eyes look. and i would not have thought much about the folds in the bedding, but of course it looks great w/o those.

and tyasa thank you so much for making me my own little tutorial- i plan to walk through it the way you describe and see how i do. i also like warm people portraits, so i'm going to try and find a middle ground btw your version and ed's re the coloring=warmth.

wish me luck!
