his pants are naturally like that, but the solid black on his shirt is grainy too - i don't get it, it's only ISO of 400 not 3200 lol

I think the grain on his shirt might be the texture of the thread reflecting the flash.. That and you're pixel peeping.

Personally I wouldn't have dressed him in black for a shot with a black background, it's never going to be as flat, so you notice every difference between the two, and you lose him in it.

I think the focus is more of a problem...looks like you had some camera moment?

You say you used natural light but he has pin lights in his eyes..did you use a fill flash? Looks like the flash was powered too high. That is one reason the image looks so flat.

Try just using the natural light with a reflector instead of the flash....unless you power your flash down and get it off the camera...
