Default Critique of a 13 month old

This is my first time on here. I would love to one day become a children photographer. I'm giving myself at least a year to practice before deciding if I'm good enough to pursue it. Please let me know how I can improve on this photo. I know that his head is cut off on the top. With an always moving 13 month old, most of his pictures are missing the top of his head, but I personally like that his face is filling in most of the frame. Let me know if I shouldn't like that his head is cut off. As you can probably tell, I'm quite insecure in my picture taking abilities, but I really really want to improve so all very honest criticism is welcomed. Thanks!

The shot looks pretty good to me as far as composition. The wall on the right hand side is a bit distracting but not a photo breaker. Overall I would say it is a good photo that definite captures emotion, which is the #1 thing people want with photos of their children. No one wants a photo of a straight faced bored looking child forced to be photographed, and you did a great job of avoiding that.

One thing that I did notice that isn't absolutely necessary but could add to the photo is getting catch lights in the eyes. Catch lights can give dimension to a portrait and generally they give a more lively feel. Again, not necessary but something that can enhance a photo.

Thanks! I was trying to use the outside light. My original plan was to have him facing more into the light, but he decided to play peek a boo behind my curtains (aka the white wall you mentioned). But yes I agree that his eyes do look a bit dull.

Oh I just noticed you're in Waycross,GA I'm not to far from you in Tifton, GA. Small world!
