Still learning myself, so can't critique technically, but I just wanted to say that I like the composition/emotion of this image quite a bit.

I too like the emotion here -- and capturing emotion in a photo isn't always easy! Could I make a couple of points about composition and one about lighting though?

Compositionally I'm not sure it's straight, and the fact that a lot of his head is out-of-frame spoils it a little for me.

Lighting-wise, if you included your EXIF data (perhaps with the time you took the shot) it would help us. The harsh shadows on his face don't help the shot, in my opinion -- I think the technical answer to this would be some sort of fill-flash arrangement (although there will be many others around here far more qualified to offer advice on this). However I don't know how practical that would be at sea!

i think you have a nice photo which could have been great.
horizon - while usually it needs to be straight, this time I will say that I like it a bit crooked, kinda gives you the feeling of sailing on the waves.
what kills it is the chopped off head. you've just chopped it too much, specially when we have so much space at the bottom.
it feels a bit underexposed too, try brightening it up a bit.
