Default Lighting Critique

I tried a new setup with main and fill tonight and looking for feeback.

I think with this set up I will add a kicker, but I am looking for feeback on the front lighting.

i think it looks real good Scott. Nice loop lighting, highlights controlled and detail in the shadows. i don't know that i would do anything different unless you were purposely going for a defined lighting setup... (like butterfly or short, broad, rembrandt etc)Or wanted more contrast between the shadow and main light. I think you're on the right path to add some rim/hair/kicker light to give you some separation.

Zona, could you please elaborate on the last sentence? I was looking at his attachment. What do you mean when you say things like "hair" and "rim"?

A light directed to skim across the hair to highlight the hair & separate the background is a hair light. A rim light is lighting from behind pointed at the subject to give some glow to the edges of the subject and make them stand out.

Zona thanks for the feeback.

I'm with zona regarding the hair lightning.
also, I think it lacks a bit of contrast and level adjustments.

Zona thanks for the feeback.
Was thinking the same think, but didn't know the jargon

Default Here is an update

Here is the same lighting arrangement with a bit of rim and hair light to round out the lighting.

One thing I changed was I added aluminum foil to the diffuse panel in the soft box to bounce light back in and around the softbox to help eliminate hot spots. This allowed me to increase the exposure without getting the blown out area in the middle of the forehead.

Nice work Scott, the hair light is a good touch...it is around the side far enough that is acting a bit like a rim light as noticed by the highlight edge on the camera right side. If you don't want that then you'd move the light up to push the light out of the frame. Good MacGivering on adding the foil, the other thing you might try is feathering the light by pointing it more and more off axis until you've eliminated the hot spot... Dang I am jealous you have the dedicated space. What a joy to be able to just go shoot without rearranging furniture and unpacking crates Good on you...

Oh, she is feathered.... the light is about 4 feet in from of the subject and at a 90 degree angle to him..... Anymore feathered and I would have lens flair.....
