Default Grandma on piano

Here's a photo of my 90 year old Grandma on the piano, as always. Used the shutter speed to produce a sort of low key image.

Nikon D90
18-105 (i know, i know, the f1.8 is coming) at 66mm

Exposure : f/5.3, 1/30s (breaking another rule), ISO 1600 (handheld)

Photoshop: 1/10. I corrected the white balance and added a little sharpening. No extra contrast.

And finally, I shoot RAW!

Tell me what you think.

Edit : Uncropped

Wow, that's wonderful! It definitely tells a story. I would probably play around with cropping in closer and see how that feels, hard to tell without actually seeing it though. Nice job!

Very, very nice!

The lighting is superb.

Your family will no doubt cherish that photo.

great feeling and great lighting! i agree with whoever said crop.

i would try to crop in a little bit closer, the extra black area around the "main" part of the photo kind of gives you a distanced feel from the subject. HOWEVER, that might just be what makes the photo, and you'll never know until you try it!

Wonderful lighting, Nico. I'm drawn to her face in that soft light from the lamp and I also love the way her hands are a part of the story. A real treasure!

@katia

Yeah, I try (as much as I can) to not crop images in the computer, although sometimes the urge is hard to resist. I'm hoping in the long term it should develop my eye for composition. That said, I do agree with you that a tight crop might have been better. Too bad I didn't think of that then! x)
