Looks like it needs a little levels adjustment to increase contrast a bit..... I hope you don't mind, and I have deleted your image, but here is a levels adjustment applied to the image.

Happy photo!

just overexposed. duplicate image and set blending mode of duplicate layer to multiply.. adjust opacity a bit if you want to lighten. flatten.

thank you both. Ed, i think it didn't start overexposed- i think i did that in elements. it's about the second picture i've ever tried to edit in raw. scooter, thank you, too. i think i'll got back to square one and lighten it less and try Ed's advice (if i can bring myself to understand it!) and then try some curves adjustment. i think one thing that is bothering me is just that the trees were so yellow and i'm accustomed to green iykwim.

I think yeah, a tad overexposed, but that's not the problem, in my opinion. The photo is a tad too green. Adjust the color balance to add a bit more magenta and you might like it more. To add the contrast it's lacking, I'd use either High Pass or Curves.

Now that looks way better. I was looking at it myself and it took me just a bit to realize that it was overexposed. Looks like it was a nice sunny day. Nice job.
