Default A learning Experience

I am very new to photography. I now take shots for family and friends, very informal. I am looking for how I could have made this shot better. My friends daughter loves the shot but I hate the shadow on her face. I am even newer to PP but I tried to get rid of it but no luck. I guess what I am looking for is how could I get a shot like this without the huge shadow. I know this is not great work but one has to start somewhere

Please be gentle but honest

Photobucket

I have an Olympus E-420
F/8
Expsoure 1/400
ISO 100
Focal lenght 150 mm
No Flash

I attempted to hide blemishes with photo editor
and added vignette with gimp.

Very nice picture!

I am by far no expert, but I would suggest a fill flash that would 'splash' a little light in the shadow area caused by the hair (see if you can adjust the power of your flash, so that it is not full power and overwhelm the rest of the pic) Yes, even in nice bright sunlight try using the flash..

Thank you....... I will give it a try next time lol . I live kinda close to the beach and thought it would be nice to take photos there but I didn't realize what a challenge it would be with so much sunlight. It was a learning experience and next time I will be a bit wiser I think. It helps that this young lady loves to be photographed and is very good at posing Thanks for taking the time to answer.

The wonderful thing about digital photography is the face that you can take MANY shots with different settings and not spend a lot. Having a willing model helps, too!
Try early morning or evening when the sun is not directly above you

You also might want to try a reflector. Something that will reflect the light where you want/need it. White poster board works nice if you have an extra pair of hands to hold it while you shoot.

I discovered my interest because I wanted nice photos of my teenager but couldnt afford any professionals in my area . I then aquired the well I can do this mind set and next thing I know family and friends are wanting some. It is just something I enjoy learning about Thanks again
