Default Daughter Seuss

I've been working on getting this backlighting thing right.... How am I doing? Does the blowout spot on the left corner ruin this photo? How is my pp? Anything I should be doing differently?

Dr. Seuss was always full of wisdom

Exif data
Camera Nikon D60
Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture f/4.5
Focal Length 55 mm
ISO Speed 400
Exposure Bias -2/3 EV

Thanks!

yeah the sheer white corner kinda kills it for me... you could crop it out, composition would still work for me. either get the light source at 90 degrees with the subject at the apex, or use the subject to block it, that should get you the rim light you're looking for.

on another note, those eyes are kind of scary PP'd

I usually fully agree with Niresangwa but today I actually disagree with something. I find that the blown out corner doesn't take away from the image. Normally it would because it would take away from areas that need attention, mainly the face, but here, for me, it didn't.

Yes, the eyes are a bit over done, but I've seen much much worse here so I wouldn't say scary.

I loooove the rim light around the right (her left) side of her head and her right side and the inside part of her left arm. The colors are lovely!

In the end, to me, this is a great natural looking portrait. Love it. Well done!

something feels weird here.
when doing backlit portraits like this you usually get less light on the face while in this photo it's perfectly lit up which gives me an unnatural feeling, meaning a lot of PP work.
now, I don't know what exactly did you do in PP but I agree with bigfuzzy regarding the eyes and would add the face in general.
I actually don't mind the blown out part of the photo as you'll most likely get blown out parts with every backlit photo (trying to expose the face to a decent level).
just to be clear, I'm not saying it's not a nice portrait, just feels unnatural to me.

The blown-out corner doesn't look too bad at first glance, but the more I look at the photo, the more I'm drawn to it. Maybe a little cropping to reduce (but not eliminate) it would help. I'd also like to see how a little more saturation in the face would look.

Thanks for the feedback guys.... I don't really remember exactly what I did in PP. I did run coffeeshop perfect portrait and then I ran another brightening action and tweaked them both some.

Here is the original only RAW converted..

I actually like the original more than the edited version, maybe try cropping a little on the left to get some of the blown out area out of the photo.

I prefer the original as well. It's a beautiful photo! I love the back-lighting.

Wonderful image and great backlighting. Gives it a really nice feel and compliments your exposure nicely. The blown out corner doesn't bother me, but I'm with carlyfan. I like the original RAW version better. It has more richness and better exposure. Great job!

I'd take the original, maybe add a little saturation to her face and sharpen and highlight the eyes (just a little, not as much as before). I don't mind the blown out corner at all. I really love the composition.
