I like the portrait. I would just darken the background up a bit to bring her out. The eye naturally goes to the place of highest contrast and with so much white everywhere the eye tends to wander behind the subject.
Just do a bit of Burning to the background, or create another layer darken the whole image and then come back and erase over the child to bring her back to the normal lighting. Would be curious to see this in color also. i bet it would really pop with her pink tones and what i'm assuming is a green background.
