Default Portraits - Review and Comments

hi -
am new in DSLR photography. Love taking portraits. Took the attached shot on my canon 500D through a 50mm lens.

Feel free to comment so I may improve.

You need to attach all your exif data so that we can help you better.

Few things:

One is focus, the face is very soft, but the head dress appears to be in focus. When you use a small aperture, put it on spot focus and aim on the eye.
Two is composition., you are shooting up her nostril, I would suggest the angle is off.
Three is B&W, does not match this image for me. I assume her head dress is alive with color, but we are robbed of the experience. I don't see where you benefit from B&W, but would have benefited from leaving it in color.

Nice first attempt & welcome to the forum.

Dear Scot -

thanks for your valuable comments. Actually, am new here so did not know much about putting up the EXIF data, as requested by you. Just added the link from flickr which usually leads to the required exif data - all the time.

Reason why B/W - i preferred that as in reality her head dress was full of light maroon and black where I thought B/W would sharpen the exposure. Angle - I agree - was not right. thanks for pointing out that. definitely - your tips would be helpful for next attempts.

keep flowing in your views.
