Default is background to blown out in black and white?

The picture in color shows green grass and it not blown out. However, when I convert to black (cropped out some of background) and try to get a more contrasting type feel the back seems blown out. I am working in lightroom and just learning. So, my question is will this look too blown out when printed. The clippings are fine, so is it okay??? When I try to bring it down everything comes down and then changes the overall feel and also make faces darker...

the background IS blown out. but it's ok.
I feel that a lot of the critique here keeps everything between the lines, keeping the photography "rules".
the thing is, many times the best photos come out when you break the rules, and this is the case with this one. I think it's a beautiful photo and I love everything about it, including the car in the background.
good job!

Actually, the background is not technically blown out. I brought it into CS2 and checked the histogram - it's bordering blown out, but it's still okay and would most likely print well.

Even though the background is not technically blown out according to the histogram, it's likely that the bright tones will fall outside of the paper's latitude and appear blown out in the print. However, that may be ok, because in this really great photo that you've created here, that won't hurt the affect of the image.

Go for the feel you want, and if it washes out, so be it.

Thanks everyone. I may still play around with it before I order a print. A few of my family members likes the picture in color, so maybe I will do one of each. I am starting to see that its not easy to make a good black and white. Yes, its easy to just convert, but I really like a black and white that pops, but I guess each one is different. I want them all to look like the one I took of my sister and her daughter (I posted in share my shots) but I am finding out none look the same. The knack is trying to tweak without that hazing or flat look which is hard to dial in for me. I guess I will eventually get it. I just starting using lightroom and really enjoy it and seem to be using it more than photoshop elements at the moment. Not sure if that good or bad lol...

And that is a tractor in the background. We were at a local pumpkin patch and I was off to the side watching all my family members. My niece starting going in for the kiss with my daughter and I literally rolled across the rocks to get the shot. I have a bruise on my knee to prove it lol.. I cut out the silo in the distance because I wasnt sure on how much headroom to leave or what the rule is on that. I know this one doesnt follow the rule of thirds....

The background is almost blown out, but it's for the good of the photo, otherwise it will appear cluttered, the exposure of the subject is just right and that's what matters in this photo
