Default First portrait

D5000
Aperture priority
shutter 1/8
f/36
ISO 200
lens 55/200

No touch ups or post work done.

What could be improved other than I seem to have lost the sparkle in the eye I know.

The only thing I realy see wrong is that it looks about 1 to 11/2 stops underexposed.
What lens did you use? The 55-200mm Nikon's smallest aperture is f22. Either way, in the shade or overcast, you may want to start around f8 or so, and this will get your shutter speed up to manageable levels. It also looks a little cool. If you shot in RAW, you can adjust the white balance to warm it up.

I would definitely decrease the aperture. Also, a horizontal frame would be nice in a photo like this.

In critiquing the photo itself, I wish she were looking at the camera. And I agree about a wider aperture to throw the trees more out of focus.
The rest is basically underexposure, but it's all easily fixable. (I did bump up the eyes a bit separately)

SK66 I am very new to all of this... just got my camera in May. I use Corel Paint shop photo pro. How would acheive this with that program? Or would another program be better. Also... other than file size what is the real difference of RAW verses Jpeg?

the photo is underexposed like everyone said, but that's not the issue for me.
I just can't understand why would you take a photo with a shutter speed of 1/8 and an aperture of f/36.
you could have gotten a much faster shutter speed and blur out the trees if you used a wider aperture.
