Default Self Portrait

Hi all,
Thought I would post a shot of a self portrait I did. Any comments on lighting would be helpful. But any general comments are welcome as well.

I have a sb600 on camera pointed at the ceiling with a white frost filter on. I have an umbrella camera left and a big window on a clody day camera right.

Self

EXIF:
Camera Nikon D40
Exposure 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture f/5.0
Focal Length 35 mm
ISO Speed 200

Also as a side, I do have the D300S but cannot find a source that isn't $$$ as a remote shutter release. Any ideas for those that have this camera?

Thanks!

Constructively,

Lighting is perfect. Beautifully done. The crop??? More head and less body. Personally if I was to use this size crop I would have brought the base of the crop to the bottom of the neckline to the sweater revealing more head. Portrait instead of landscape crop would have worked better maybe getting all of the head in for a better frame balance.

This is NOT taking away from the beautiful image…only questioning the crop.

Awesome lighting work :0)

I like the image a lot and disagree with the person above about the crop. Maybe smooth the skin a bit if you desire but it really doesn't need much. Nice shot!

Thank you both.

Have gone back in and did some touch ups. Will have to keep that in mind for the future.

I agree about the crop. It just so happened that it was cropped like this in camera and I wasn't fond of the portrait style for this shoot. But agree - if doing a client they might like to see their WHOLE head!

As for remotes, I use the ML-30 on my D300. Its only about 3 ft long, cost arouond $50, and there is an extension available to double the length. I use the interval timer function for self portraits and untended shooting, works well once I get the framing set up. The manual explains how to use it.

Any inexpensive 10 pin remote will work.

I have one like shown and a better wireless one...

Decent lighting. I would sharpen the eyes and brighten them.

Overall a decent self portrait
