Default My blue-eyed boy..

So I have been playing around with my 35mm f/1.8 for about a month now and was hoping to get some feedback on this photo. Am I seeing noise, or is it just the shallow DOF that I see? And does the shallow DOF work in this photo. I really didn't have much room to bump up the aperture. Also how is the PP in this? Would you do anything differently?

Sept 2010 046 vespa

Exif data
Camera Nikon D60
Exposure 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture f/2.2
Focal Length 35 mm
ISO Speed 800
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash No Flash

Thanks for the feedback! You guys are great and I've learned so much from all of you.

Firstly I love this image, you have a beautiful boy. I didn't think that was noise but then I see you have the ISO at 800....having a D60 myself I don't think it does great with high ISO numbers...any reason why you had it at 800?....I have that lens too and love it...you are outside so ISO could have been at 100. ..I like the focus on the eyes......

I have the ISO at 800 because it was late evening and the sun was quickly going down. He's back is facing NW. I'm still at a toss up for if it is noise or shallow DOF. LOL If your first impression is shallow DOF, that is a plus. heehee

Sometimes I notice more noise at 800 with D60 and other times I don't. Does DOF have an effect on this too? Like in this scenerio where I have ISO 800 with a shallow DOF vs ISO with a more wide DOF. Thanks for any input, I'm just trying to figure out my limitations with the new lens, with this camera.

Cute shot. I like it. It is noisy but so what? It does not detract from the image so in my opinion is not an issue. I especially like the reflection in his eyes.

My only comment is that his skin looks a little unnaturally red on my calibrated monitor.

Thanks for the comments! I'm going to avoid ISO 800 for the most part now.

I like the noise, it gives the picture a hyper-realistic airbrush artist style that was popular a while back. I wouldn't change a thing. Awesome.

I think it's great! Love his expression, the PP, everything about it. Nice job!

Great shot.

It is ISO noise and could easily be cleaned up if desired, I would if you were going to do a large print.
The DOF is good, I would not go wider on the aperture...in fact, I think you missed optimal focus just slightly due to the shallow DOF..(it seems to be sharpest about forehead and not quite the eyes, the eyes could be sharpened a bit in post as well)

I will agree with others that I like the grain. Looks like film grain which is normal! It all depends on if you like the look.

+1 on the redness. shows up on my calibrated monitor as well.
