Hello everyone. This is my first post on Portrait theme in the critique section; I must admit that portraits are not my strong point. As a beginner that I am, I'm more of a landscape shooter; portraits are very complex to deal with according to me, so I have evaded them so far
. But as with everything else, I am eager to learn, and this is a start...![]() Story: This picture was made at my aunt's place in Calcutta. The practice of selling whole fish at doorsteps by cleaning it, cutting it right in front of a customer fascinated me; I later found out this is common practice.I found it unusual nevertheless and hence the picture (My apologies in advance if this offends any vegetarians here). Critique queries: Does the main subject of the fish vendor and his work-in-progress get enough attention in the frame, the way this is composed from the top? (I chose to do this because of the dialectic created between the harder shapes of the flooring and the softer shapes of the fish/man/vessels, this is the effect sought through b.w photography and this angle) I want to know whether the contrasts / levels work for this unusual subject. I have pushed exposure to reveal film grain, which I think adds to the spirit/feel of the picture, also gives it a photojournalistic /old newspaper effect:as viewers, are you in agreement, is this desirable? Any other critical views and feedback are very welcome. Thanks. Gear Info Very old ! I have recently revived my dad's 27 year old camera and am shooting film in addition to my usual DSLR photography. Having a ball ! This picture is made with:Asahi Pentax K1000 camera Sunagor MC 24 mm f = 1:2.8 lens 100 ASA Kodak T100 B/w film Exif and process Focal length: 24 mm (on full frame 35 mm) Aperture: f/4 Speed: 1/60 s Negative scan to 1840 x 1232 pixels. Exposure pushed electronically on Adobe Lightroom 3 to reveal film grain

I really like this photo and shooting with film is really great. They have so much more character than those boring digital camera's.
The main thing I looked at first was the dark basket/plate. I then noticed the person and lastly the fish he was holding. I think the dark spot distracts a little too much. It would be great if you could tone it down. I like the angle the shot was taken from. The film-grain effect is nice, but there is a bit too much of it on the person's face imo. Overall It's a great shot!
