Honestly, I quite like this style of photos. Lou O'Bedlam on Flickr is one of the masters of this style I believe. (HERE, HERE, and HERE)
The difference, and something I think you needed here, is a bit of fill light. I'd suggest a reflector or off camera fill flash.. but just a little, not too much (which is why often reflectors are better for this). You just need a bit more detail in the subjects... otherwise, it's quite nice. And, as warning, some will say they don't like the sunflares.. but to me, for this type of image, they're great as it adds that whole "the sun is part of this image" feeling.
