Does this photo need a crop and how is the color? Of course, any other comments or critiques would be greatly appreciated.

Oh man, that title made me smile...haven't seen that one in a while! (And, didn't need the Cliff's note either, ha!)

It's a cute capture...of course would have been better with them closer together, but you can't just be moving children and say "Do it again!"

I always try a BW conversion when there's too much clutter.

The colour looks fine to me. But in terms of the crop, I'd do just a little one, cropping out that dark part at the top (which I'm guessing is a rock wall). I also find my eye drawn to the brightness of the water, so if that could be toned down a bit, I think you'd have a very cute shot.

Yeah, it is sort of impossible to ask a one year old to do anything specific. I will try a black and white conversion tonight.

Question: How would I go about trying to tone down the water? I have Photoshop elements and DPP.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

What a cute title to go with an adorable shot!!

No, you can't ask a 1 yr old to move, but you were at the beach. Sand is one of the easiest things in the world to clone because there is no pattern. To move them together, you can simply copy the little one, paste him into a new layer and move him over. There's a bit too much water in the scene, the focus needs to be the boys. Your WB looks good, and the boys expressions are classic! I'd also clean out the knee close to the little boy in the jacket.

Below is an example of my suggestions done using gimp. If you'd like me to remove it, I will gladly do so.

WOW!!! What a great edit! Can you point me to any tutorials on how to "move" him over like you did. That technique is above my limited knowledge base. However, I would love to give it a try.

This was done in gimp:
  1. Open original image.
  2. Use the rectangular select tool to select the little boy.
  3. Create a new layer by Layer-New Layer
  4. Paste the little boy into the new layer.
  5. Position the little boy where you want him to be. Add a white layer mask by going to Layer-Mask. A white mask allows you to paint out any unwanted part of a layer so you only see what is underneath. Paint around the edges of the layer with a large, soft black brush to soften edges and blend the layers.
  6. Clone out any unwanted blanket.
  7. Crop picture to desired size getting out as much of the knee as possible. What little was left of the knee and blanket, I simply cloned out.

It took a lot longer to write than to do. Please let me know if you have any questions.
