Would a tighter crop (taking out soe of the gray part) help make this a bit better?

Just a thought....

I had thought about it, and I also noticed a few "imperfections" that I took care of. What do you think?

I like this better, but it still may need a curves adjustment or something else to make it "pop" a bit more.......

Agree?

Great first shot! A few things to work on. It seems a underexposed for my tastes. Next time I would try it outside or next to a window to let some more natural light in. I have a D5000 and I can almost guarantee that with dim lighting like this and shooting auto you are going to end up with noisy pictures. They are the bane of my existence. Also, next time try moving her to the other side of the frame so she is looking into the frame instead of out of it. You want her to direct your eye into the picture. Putting her where she is draws your eye out of the frame and there is nothing on the other side to bring it back. That is why the blank space may look a little awkward. To make this frame work try cropping it vertical instead of horizontal and it should help. Otherwise, have fun! The D5000 is a great camera to play with. Good luck!
