Default Lighting issues...

Is the problem with this image the lighting? (natural lighting from a side window). Any suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated. Thank you.

maybe?! The two biggest things I see are blown highlights and black areas without detail. This could be a result of your conversion or lighting. How tempered are the shadows and highlights in the orginal?
Also what is the exif data?

Zona, I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "tempered".

The image info is:
Nikon D40X 1/20s
Focal Length: 55.0mm f/5.6
ISO: 1600

By tempered, I'm fairly certain Zona means whether the original retained detail in the shadows and/or highlight areas, which are now blown out (the texture on the blanket) or smothered to blackness (most of the hair).

you might want to try and using a plain white curtain to diffuse the light coming in from the window, so it's not as harsh. otherwise i would play around with the curves and levels a little bit, so that the whites aren't so blown out. otherwise a cute shot. i like that the subject is a little off center in the image.

did you process this photo? Can't really give you specifics on your lighting, if it was mainly altered in post...

Eastree, Zona...in the original the hair color is able to be seen (light brown), but the image was so bright that I brought out the shadows in post. There was even less detail in the blanket in the original.

PROF...thinking about it, you're right. It's a lousy question to ask about lighting in an edited photo. Next time I will submit the original, pre-editing. Thanks

Marcus...thank you for the curtain idea. Hope that will work.

Thanks, All for the tips

No worries, neophotobug,

based off your above comment, I can safely say that you overexposed the image. Looking at your exif data, I can see why.

Your ISO is extremely high at 1600 plus you are using a slow shutter speed of 1/20. You're also using a slightly more open aperture of 5.6. So all three of those settings combined give you the overexposure.
