I recently did a fashion inspired photoshoot with one of my favourite models. I got heaps of shots which I liked (and more importantly that the client liked!!) but i keep coming back to this one as one that could use improvement. There has been no post processing, so perhaps its the whiteness of the shoulders etc with the rest of the scene (although I quite like that!) and possibly the facial expression.pose. What do you guys think also of the location - I kind of liked the rurality and run down-ness of the background in contrast to the pretty dress etc ... any feedback would be super appreciated

She is a beautiful model, but I do agree that the lack of posing does not work very well in this case. Although, relaxed, unposed shots can work well, in this case the lack of posing/expression, coupled with this particular composition make the shot not very interesting (beyond the beauty of the model). Having her more off-center, standing at a little more of an angle, and/or cropping the shot differently would definitely add more dynamism to the shot. The back area on the bottom right is also distracting and chops off her feet. I would think a tighter crop (maybe a little above the waist?) with the model more towards the left third of the frame would work well.
I like the location and the background is ok, but the shot does look a little underexposed. I know you didn't ask about editing, but a little curves adjustment might help the shot as well. The shoulders and chest area are pretty white, but I am fairly new to post-ed and am not sure how that could be fixed. I don't think that destroys the shot either, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, I am very much an amateur, so that just my opinion. Good luck, and keep up the good work!

i think that the background is nice... the model: she is very pretty, but I agree, the pose, her face... not that great... and I also agree that if it were more off center (rule of thirds here would help a lot) and her pose a bit different... then it could be a nice photo!

The pose is definitely a bit off, she almost looks like a daughter saying to her dad "just take the darn picture!" Which isn't probably what you were going for.
It'd be fun to experiment with some processing, however. The element in the bottom right definitely needs to be cropped out, as well as the weeds in front (and overlapping) her dress cloned away. A brighter red on the dress, as well as some overall contrast, would probably do wonders. Maybe even a crop. |
