So, I am very new to this whole thing. You know....photography, critiquing, posting.... I would very much like some input into lighting. Unfortunately I do not have any info on how I took the picture (will do better next time) except that it was taken with a Canon Rebel XS. Thank you for any input you can provide.

The details of your image are captured in a file called "EXIF data" within the image when you snap the shutter. Most of the big PP programs will allow you to see this information or you can use a site like Jeffery's EXIF viewer. With your image I was able to extract the following information about this shot:
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS Lens: 50 mm Exposure: Auto exposure, Aperture-priority AE, 1/2,656 sec, f/2.5, ISO 200 I'll let others explain what went wrong here, but I will tell you this; its all right there in the EXIF data.

I personally love this picture! I am not a professional I am just an amateur and I do not have a lot of technical knowledge, I just know what I think looks good........as a mother, I can tell you that if I were paying someone to get good shots of my kids I would be happy with your work!
I know it isnt technical critique....but I hope it helps.
