Default toddler pic

Hi Everyone, I am completly new to photography so I dont really know all the terms yet but I am slowly learning. I have been at this for only about a week now so bare with me a little. I love this forum and hope to learn a ton fron everyone out there.

Here is a pic I took of my son. Please crtique it A LOT .

I have a Canon EOS 40D, this pic was shot at ISO 400, 41 MM F/5.6 1/500SEC

I have no idea what I am doing but I think the shot came out fairly well, I may need to play around with it a bit more in lightroom.

Any suggestions appreciated

Hello and welcome,

Not a portrait expert, but I'd have probably shot vertically (the left 40% of the pic has no points of interest), and if horizontally, I'd have probably placed the toddler at the left side, because is facing to the right; I'd have also chosen a more appropriate background or used a larger aperture to blur it even more (so that the toddler facial expression or posture is the one and only point of attention). However all this depends on the context, namely the immediate surroundings where you took the photo and the different possibilities.

A square crop like the one below could also prove useful to remove some of the unnecessary elements of the pic, but still not the chair, which I find distracting:

Finally the face could have been brighter for my taste, but perhaps some other people can comment that.

Greetings

Thanks for the information Alex, I agree the chair is distracting and I do like the crop you did. I will play around with it some more and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for your reply
