Default my second :) attempt at portraits

ok .. so I took alot of advice from this site and I hope I used it all properly theres always so much great advice here... Thanks everyone!

Tyrell 07-11-10 - a set on Flickr

I would like critique on lighting, composition, general critique etc and of course ANYTHING else you might feel will help me is always greatly appreciated!

My camera is a rebel Xs

most of these shots were taken with my
50mm f/1.8 prime @ f/1.8
ISO 100 to 800 as it got darker
no flash
aperture priority

overall i think they are very nice. one thing bothered me on the very first shot and that is the sun burst effect that is right over the model's forehead - i found it very distracting. i like that you're not afraid to cut off you're subject's forehead as well - i'm a big fan of unconventional portraits.

Agreed: in the first picture, the light effect is distracting. It looks to me like it has been PP added; try without...

Some other photos have other type of issues: for instance IMG_0227_1_1024x683 has far too much red saturation, and blue as well. Could have more contrast too. I like much more its counterpart IMG_0226_1024x683; but you could still tweak it a bit to make it pop.

Thank you both very much .. as I said this is my second attempt at shooting portraits .. I plan on ALOT more practice .. trying to move over to the SYS section

I'm also going to take a Photoshop course at my local college ..

To post from Flickr you'll need to click on the link above your photo that says share. Next click on html code and pick the size you want. copy and paste!

thanks for the info Windrider .. but I was trying to just upload a picture.. I kept getting a "not a valid image file" error.. but now in the future I know how to do it from Flickr thanks
