Default Woo Hoo Off Auto for first time!

('raw i am a dinosaur')

A friend asked me to take some pics of her little one - if we get any good ones between now and September, then she intends using them for her hubbies 50th birthday present. (FOC but I get to use her gorgeous little model).

I left the ISO too high by mistake - beginners nerves! I also used a flash so I know the lighting is a little flat on his face.

Without buying proper lighting etc - what could I have done to help improve? Is this one for the aeroplane sick bag over the flash to soften it? Should I have stuck a reflector on the floor in front of him (although I think that would have been a huge temptation for a three year old!)

Advice & tips welcome.........
Camera: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 800
Exposure Bias: -1 EV
Flash: On, Red-eye reduction

It appears you have your photo marked as "private" and we can't view it.

It's showing up now!
I am not seeing much noise at all, so ISO shouldn't be an issue.
It's a nice black and white, but I would boost the contrast some. His face is just a little too gray for my taste.
The only hard shadow I see is right below his chin line, which could have been softened with a reflector, or at the very least, a white sheet of paper.

The focus is good. Eyes are nice and sharp.

Watch your composition for things like tables growing out of heads, and other distracting background elements that don't add to the image.

All in all, i would say this was a good effort! Just the couple of nit picky things i mentioned before.

I love the expression btw!
