Default Lighting Practice

Ok, need some critique on my lighting here. Please disregard the background as I wasn't concerned with that.

Working with a softbox and a reflector. Softbox just to the left of the camera and a gold reflector to the right of the subject (looking at the subject).

Trying to get my lighting thing on...

Thanks for looking.

We can't help you much unless you tell us what kind of atmosphere you want to create.

The background may still be important from a lighting point of view, as you can set up your lights such that it's less distracting or even invisible.

I'm more concerned with the subject and portrait lighting. This was spur-of-the-moment shooting with the wife and little guy so I didn't have a chance to do anything about the background. I can deal with the background, just trying to improve my subject lighting skills with portraits.

I'm no expert but I think I would try for just a little more light from the reflector, along his jaw line, maybe from below? Right now his ear sticks out from the dark or semi-dark.

I was sort of thinking the same thing. Have to tweak it a bit and see if I can get some more light on the face. Would be helpful to have two lights.
