Default Portrait at Alviso Salt Ponds

I like the way this photo turned out, but since I'm a novice I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for in order to improve the photo. Anything helps!

Salt Ponds

EXIF Data:
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture: f/4.5
Focal Length: 35 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

You have done well under the conditions but these are conditions most pros would avoid. Midday light tends to be rather harsh and unflattering. You would be better off looking for open shade with an appropriate background.

Thanks for the tips Lee! I was having trouble taking some photos in the shaded areas. Next time I'll try it with a higher ISO.

Although I think the picture is well done, I can't keep from thinking the hands are dead or something, anyhow their posture is awkward. Maybe they are just distorted from being closer to the lens.
In my photography, I tend to focus too much on technicality only to find out later that the "worst" elements in my portraits are the poses. In this case I would maybe have advised a hand in the pocket.

Oh wow! Very good eye! Now that you've pointed it out it does look a bit awkward. Thanks for the advice and suggestion!
