Default Andrea on a Train

Hi All--

I shot this on a little train. I tried to use the on camera flash for a fill light. 2 things I'm concerned about witrh this shot. 1.) The lighting of her face is too flat. 2.) The light on her arm is still blown out. Beside those 2 concerns, I'm sure there are others I should know be have fail to do so. Please let me know what those things are.

Nikon D5000
f 11.0
1/250
Focal Length 46mm (Lens 18-55mm)
ISO 200
Camera Raw

Your lighting is a bit flat...but it always will be if using on camera flash. While it does manage to get rid of annoying under eye shadows, it just isn't in a good position to give you interesting lighting...for that, you really have to get it off camera. That said...I think you did a nice job with the equipment that you had available...it would have been difficult to get the sunlit arm exposed properly without underexposing her face, and I don't really think it takes too much away from the shot. The only thing that I would mention compositionally is the bar sticking out of the top of her head...definitely something to try to avoid in the future.

Smile Andrea on a train

Jerry,

There are two poles sticking out of the top of Andrea's head. Try to avoid that next time.
