Default How much of body length?

I have experimented with my daughter and her dog, Goliath. Unfortunately I don't yet have all the fancy lighting equipment, but I have a good flash. This photo was a bit overexposed, but the pose was good. My question is, does the colour work? There was also shadows behind them that I need to photoshop out. I did heavy vibrance (-75) And does the cropping work. I cropped out the floor and their legs.

I like what you were trying to do with the light, but the biggest problem that I see here is that her gaze and (camera) left arm are leading you straight out of the picture. Instead of being interested in her and her dog...I'm wondering what's over there that she's so interested in. If she's going to be looking to her left...then get the dog on the left and put her in the right of the frame...and get those arms in the shot. I still make a lot of those same mistakes when it comes to positioning, it's a lot more difficult to spot in your own work.
