I like the crop but it seems slightly out of focus to me.....

I like the crop too, it's nice and intimate, which is just about right for the mood and the subject. The only thing I'd do differently (if it was my shot) would be to rotate the image slightly, so that whatever it is the baby's lying on was horizontal.

I've had a look at the large size image on your Flickr page, and I can't quite work out whether the softness issue is down to the whole image being out of focus, or whether it's motion-blur. It could be a bit of camera-shake, although at 50mm (and I'm guessing you've used a prime for it) you ought to be able to get away with 1/80s for the shutter.

Looking at the texture on the black fleece, it's looks as though there's a fairly narrow strip that's in focus right by the baby's hand (but blurred by motion), but it also looks like that's beyond where the two faces are.

It might be worth upping the ISO a little, just to allow you a faster shutter to make sure you totally eliminate that blur, and perhaps be a little more careful about your focus point.

But you only asked about the crop - I'm guessing you're already well aware of the blurring thing..

Russ.

I personally would crop it a tad tighter on the left hand side so that you don't see so much of the mom's neck.

Thanks...I think you are right about the camera shake and focus. This was my first attempt so I just need to practice, practice, practice. Appreciate your time and good comments.
