Default Shadow and light

On Saturday i got some problems with exposure over or under or both!
It's very difficult to find the right settings and to compose, I took a lot of pictures. It was in the middle of afternoon and the sun is shining very bright! It's better to take picture to stand in the sun and compose to the shadow or around?
Any critique is welcome

Shooting in A mode
shutter 1/250s
f 7,1
ISO 200

Yeah, light like this is horrible to shoot in. I think you did a decent job considering. You could have chosen to use spot metering on the face, over-exposing the sunny side of the photo. The face is the most important part, so if you have to make consessions make sure the face stays well lit.

Another thing that may help is to go to ISO 100. Generally the lower the ISO the higher the dynamic range of the sensor. It's only a (very) small difference, but it may help nonetheless.

As a final hint: try to avoid maximum contrast in the foreground-background. The very bright cart is in front of the darkest part of the background. Taking the photo more from the right would have used more of the lit, green background.

It's the job of the photographer to make sure their model looks good I generally find it a good idea to analyse a photo as if I had all the time in the world to orchestrate it. Of course the world doesn't work that way, especially with little kids, but if you think enough about how you would have wanted it to be, at some point it'll become easier to actually get it

Of course! :P

And of course it's the model's job to make the photographer's job (as easy as) possible
