Default Evening photo while on vaca...

Hey everyone. I'm new to photography and to my new D3000 i got a few months ago. It is my first DSRL. I recently when on vacation with my girl (pictured in the photo), and tried out my D3000. Here's a shot that i kind of like, but i feel may have been too dark. I'm new to this so any and all c&c is welcome.

Pic specs:
Time taken: 10:28pm
Lens: nikkor VR 18-55mm
No flash used
Focal length: 36mm
F/9
exposure time: 13 secs.

There was no editing done to the pic. I haven't picked up any editing software.

Pretty girl! i think that it is a little underexposed, and probably should be straighten a little.
Also, the chairs on the background seems distracting.

Thanks for the feedback. I noticed the picture is not exactly straight and i agree that it is a little underexposed. Thanks again!

Rear curtain flash might of helped to expose the girl

I feel that the photo lacks sharpness, its a bit soft. Also, the girl (a very pretty one) is in the center of the photo and its a bit distracting, maybe the rule of thirds would have made a difference?

Great shot though! Love the colors and the mood!

Hey Jared S,
I often wonder why photos are taken like this, what is the subject of the photo? Of course it's your girl, then why does she only occupy about ten percent of the real estate of the image? I understand you want to have her in those surroundings but hey, come in a lot closer so we can admire her beauty as well as the holiday resort. reposition her, get her away from those horrible distracting vertical posts. Hmmm, and maybe a slightly more modest pose might be needed. You seemed to have captured some of the ambient lighting and atmosphere of the moment. 13 secs exposure? If you were to do this pic again you would want to come in closer, open up the aperture, use a tripod, and choose an adequate ISO without getting to much noise. Cheers Woodymite.

Hey woodymite (or should I say Steve B??).. the guy just said he's new.. why don't you drop some of the superiority act and give him some actual knowledge instead of using vague terms like "open up the aperture"... you think he knows what that means? Maybe even explain how that helps instead of saying "do this. do that"... why do you bother?

And just what is a "more modest pose"?

You're free to have your opinion, but how seriously do you think you're going to be taken writing the things you do in your posts? I, for one, have already written you off. Not that it means anything...

^ I like this guy.

As for the picture, the subject, I feel, should fill the frame. In my opinion, a portrait is to either show a person or where that person is. But to do that, you have to get a feel for composition first, which I know you'll get soon.

Looking good. Don't forget that photography is really all about fun, if you're not having fun while learning I don't really see the point. So enjoy every second of it and don't let others' boisterous actions become a downer.
