Default two in one

a simple attempt at capturing the joy of mother and the comfort of baby.

Shot using a canon 400d using 18-200 lens in night portrait mode with flash on. from a distance of about 4 feet, post processing done using on-one photo tools n photoshop.

please critique and let me know how i can improve at capturing such images, as i still feel something is missing in it .. i am not too sure what that may be .. but then

The crop on the mom might be too tight. You've lobbed off part of her head. The whole thing feels just a bit claustrophobic to me, like it needs a little more empty space around them.

Not sure if it's makeup, shadow, or new motherhood, but there's a darkness under the mom's eyes that seems kind of distracting without knowing what it is. If it's a lighting thing, then a reflector or fill flash might help even that out.
