I like her pose and the angle you took. The 2 things that stand out the most for me is, the bright area to the one side of her is distracting and the glare on her glasses are also distracting.
I might also try sharpening up her face a bit. Otherwise very nicely done

I love pictures of older people! There always seems to be a story waiting to be told. Before you try lightening it, I would try taking out some red. The white balance seems off. Too much red can make the picture look darker. Also, I agree that the glare in her glasses and the light section on the right can be distracting. Good shot though!

I would try a tighter crop for the bright background (I completely agree to this - but is there any other way to save the snap instead of the crop - may be some post processing)
AND try to take out some red (might take away the mood though) About the glare in the glasses- probably its too late to take that out. May be will take care next time
