Default My new found friends!

I met these guys in Savannah who asked me to take their picture.
From savannah

There wasn't much I could do as far as getting them to "pose" because it was totally spontaneous, but is there anything I could have done in advance to be better prepared for shots like this?

Nikon D3000
35mm f1.8
Aperture f2.8
ISO 200
Exposure 1/60

The gang sign don't turn my crank. This would have been a great photo without that nonsense. Sorry, but my true thoughts.

I hear what you're saying, but I like I said, this wasn't the crew to ask to pose! I took what I could get! My question wasn't about how folks felt about urban youth and their affiliations...it was about photographic technique.

LOL, I totally have to agree with Mr. Metro on this one.

As far as photography techniques, though, I don't care for this flash. Because flash was used, this looks like it's just a regular snapshot to me.

External flash, or maybe different soft box lighting would make this pop. Also, if they could be near lights (I know the photo was at night,) then maybe you could crank the ISO up, with a longer exposure, and capture it without flash.

That's my two cents! :-)

+1 A good rule is to stay away from anything that screams "gang". And this is clearly a gang throwing up signs.

While I'm not crazy about the gang thing going on either, I see your point and you did ask for critique on the photo itself.

That being said, unfortunately popup flash gives flat, harsh lighting. Was this taken at night? Also, the BW conversion is a bit muddy and could stand for some brightening up. Hope this helps.
