Default My First Off Camera Flash Portrait

hey guys, Im new to the forum and i wanted to post up one of the first pictures i took using my D90 and new SB-600 using CLS.

out of the 40-50 shots i took of my gf during this shoot on our front steps, the only one i really liked is totally candid.

Your comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Hi and Welcome.
Darn nice job! I like it, the lighting, like the enviornment, is stark, edgy, moody contrasted with a beautiful lines of the model. Nice work.

I like the lighting!

...but the dead center composition isn't doing anything for me. The odd yellow cast on the left side of the photo is distracting, too.

Nice work getting the flash off the camera, though.

yah i agree with the center composition. I didnt mean to do that. :/

that yellow cast is the streetlight. im guessing it is a sodium light or something? the color is white to the naked eye, but the camera saw yellow at a slower shutter speed. I thought it was interesting. After reading up on more technique, i couldve fixed that with a yellow flash gel and a different WB right?

I figured it was a streetlight...you can fix that cast in post processing - might be kind of a pain, but it can be done. A different WB would throw off the whole shot, though (including her skin).

I'm SO not the one to ask about gels though, LOL! I've never used them. Where's Candleman when we need him?
