...My 3 year old is half Japanese and half Kiwi
He has his grandmother's hair I Didnt want to use fill-in as it may have killed the other points in the picture...![]() You can see my MANY other shots in my signature linked to Facebook

Placement of him in the frame is good but the location could use some work. The background is too close too him and contains too much detail. It looks like you aperture was pretty wide open for this shot so moving him to a different location with more distance between him and the background will help blur it out so it's not as distracting. This is not to say all backgrounds are distracting for portraits but it some have some context with the person. Here it's just a glass window with bars. I also think there may be a white balance, color balance or color saturation issue going on here. He seems very orange on my monitor. Your focus, child expression and exposure look good. Thank you for sharing.

Murtasma thanks so much for that
Really appreciate your lengthy reply ![]() Understood re: placement...It was just a snap shot really so it was just where he was at the time...hair and orange shirt and late afternoon sun added to that too i think but maybe I was a little too eager to retouch the colours? ![]() Understood re: DOF...will keep an eye on that... But your comments have definately helped me to 're-see' the shot!! Thanks again

...Thanks ACB...yeah i noticed Bobcut's intentions after seeing his other posts...Thanks
![]() ...Thinking back on the shot i realised that i lightened it with Nikon's in-camera D-Lighting (D40) which explains alot of the brown / orange...I dont think i played with the saturation at all on it... ...You know i totally missed the grubby window, being so intent on grabbing his expression...It was just a shot that pressented itself, (can you believe i ACTUALLY wear my camera around the house? Talk about obsessive compulsive!!)But all good comments...Thanks for commenting on the good parts too Appreciated...

I like the offset composition. I think you've also captured the essence of child photography with this shot in the he has an expression of curiosity and innocence. Great eyes!
I also agree about the color and background. There's not much tonal difference between the hair, shirt, and face. It's almost as if this was shot through an amber colored filter or something. The background is distracting and too close...the reflection in the glass and the bug splatter catch my attention. |
