Default Jr Prom time!

So I had a gig shooting pre-Jr. Prom photos the other day. Got another for Prom photos. Lots of fun.

Anyway, here's my favorite shot from the shoot.

70mm
f4
1/160
ISO 125
On Camera Flash (fired)

What are you wanting a critique on?

Also, what did you have your white balance set at?

Any critique is welcome. Only way to learn is when people tell you what isn't working.

WB was set to auto. I am using a daylight WB in LR as I felt it looks better than the flash WB.

There was a time when a pro would complain about her left elbow pointing straight toward the lens making it look large, and the image being flat lit, a busy and distracting background, his head tipped to the feminine shoulder, the extreme camera tilt, all four eyes in a straight line across, disunity in eye direction between them, but this is 2010 so who cares right? Great shot, keep it up.

LOL!

Thanks. I will keep those things in mind.

Couldn't do anything about the background. Was shooting 4 couples and we started inside and wound up outside once the light was good.

Hi Rick...or is it Gadget?
In terms of following the critique guidelines, you might want to pose a specific question or element of the photo that you want critiqued. However, I'll still offer you my overall opinion.

I'm not a pro, so take it FWIW, but here are my thoughts for you to consider for next time:
  1. if you are "the" photographer, then you should have priority when snapping the shutter; i.e. the subjects should both be looking in your direction.
  2. since it's prom, we all know the outfits are THE most important thing short of the hair-dos, I'd shoot portrait orientation to capture a good portion, if not all, of the dress.
  3. I'd pose either her in front of him with both facing the same direction, or them facing each other. This pose is awkward, as it appears he might be carrying her on his back (kidding...kinda), and his lean-back head tilt looks uncomfortable.
  4. I'd pull them even farther away from the background to put more focus on them and less detail behind.

Hope that helps! Good luck with your next gig.

Excellent comments. I do have plenty of those kinds of shots. This is only one out of about 30 I have of this couple.

I like this photo for a few reasons. First, this couple was very playful and this captures some of that playfulness. Second, I like him looking back like that as it looks as though he's looking for her back there (I know, personal preference and all.). And third, she looks extremely happy to be there, with him. Since this was a Jr. Prom, I couldn't expect the kids to be as close as a bride and groom and this couple was the closest as they have been friends forever and now are a couple.

But thanks so much for the comments!

I actually like the spontaneity of this shot, although the formal ones are necessary, it's as if they have relaxed for just a moment. It does bother me a little that there is more space to the left of them, and that red bush in the background but I also feel it is an alternative to the usual formal photos that you see from such a formal event. I like it alot and love the beautiful lighting!

Thanks, I was after a spontaneous shot. I do agree the cropping needs to be better. Still trying to get cropping down.

I do have plenty of the formal shots. I got those out of the way first.

I shot 4 different couples this day.
