This is my first upload to DPS. I took this photograph with a Canon 450D, 50mm lens, f1/8, shutter speed 1/1250, ISO 100, AWB.
I would really like to be able to get some nice photos of my grandchildren and would appreciate any tips, suggestions and/or advise to help me improve my photos. Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.

Exclamation Suggestion

Hi BR. Welcome to DPS! Good for you for posting for critique, that's one of the best ways to improve your work.

From what I can tell, it's a very cute shot of a very cute girl. Her skin may be a bit on the pink side, but it's hard to say. Unfortunately, it's a bit too small to offer up much critique. Might I suggest attaching a larger file, or using flickr or some other hosting site to link a larger version. I think that will help ensure you get some solid feedback from other members.

Agreed with Aimee - with such a tiny photo it's difficult to give accurate critique - but from what I can see her skin is very cool and pink.

Thanks for the advise. I have a flickr page and am trying to upload from it so the image will be larger. I truly appreciate your comments!

Ok, I got the bigger file uploaded and I see now that her skin tone is a little pink. How can I fix that?

Are you shooting in RAW, or JPG? The white balance is off. Do you have any editing software? This isn't too bad, and be corrected with a white point adjustment, with Photoshop, or some other kind of editing program.

I do shoot in RAW and my editing program is CS4. As you can see I'm learning and trying to develop an eye for what is right and/or wrong. My camera was set on AWB in this photo. What should I do to correct it? THANKS!!!

On this particular photo, you can open up the image in CS, go to the levels window, select the white point dropper, and use it on one of the squares of her shirt. I did it in GIMP, and it corrected it immediately. If you are using Camera raw or Bridge, which I know nothing about, you shoul have a WB adjustment slider, or a similar dropper tool there as well.

Here is what I did. Just a simple white point adjustment, and a little crop.
Hope you don't mind. I just have fun working on photos. You had a really good image to start with anyway.!
