Default Using my new camera (Nikon D5000)

I just got my camera for Mother's Day and I'm so excited to have it. I think I've taken over 300 pictures in the last week. Here's one that I feel as an amateur is pretty good. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

A lot of people use Flickr or other sites and embed their photo from there. I use Flickr. When I click on my photo and click all sizes, there is code underneath it that I will copy directly into my post here. This will place a copy of the picture directly in your post...I think there may be information in the forum rules as well...

Great picture. I like the focus on the eyes and the catchlight in the eyes but I can also see the flash in the fireplace glass. That is a little distracting. The background with that glass is a little distracting.

Most important is to keep shooting and trying. This is a great start.

No problem. I also have the D5000 and love it.

As for the shot, I think you may hear the following...dead center subject is usually less appealing. So, you may want to use the rule of thirds and try to place the space in-between his eyes in the upper right part of the frame. Also, I would try to straighten out the horizontal line from the fireplace so it doesn't look diagonal.....

I, of course, am new myself, so these are merely newbie to newbie suggestions.....

Do you like this crop? And I agree, the flash in the glass should be taken out....

I do like the crop and I appreciate the input as well. I did notice the flash in the background after I took it. But you can't improve unless you mess up right?
