I tried to look at the full size image but its marked private. For me i don't like the top of the head cut off. I'm just a newbie so take it for what its worth.

In shots like these, cutting of the melon is ok..
Not sure what you ment by Blowing out the background?
If you wanted it to be bright and see nothing, Spot Meter on his face outdoors in bright light..
If you wanted to make the Background Blurry, Open the lens up a little more, take a step or 2 back and fire away.. Oh, ISO 100 on that Canon..

Seems over exposed to me.

Not sure if this was the way it was shot, or it happened in post, but there seems to be lack of detail.

I really like the one on your Flickr titled Goofy Face.

I think you have your picture titles backwards. The one you posted here is titled hottie.

Thank you for the advice. And yes I messed up the title, But after 3 mistakes at getting my post up I wasn't going to be changing the title !! We shall keep that between us
After all your kind replys I think it was a combination of too close, wrong setting and PP, All good but as next time I will be more aware of these mistakes
