Default impromptu piano duet

Last night my daughters decided to sit down and play the piano - I grabbed my camera and started shooting. I found that the lighting wasn't great and there was a fair bit of shadows - I couldn't get a well focussed shot of both girls and had to take two shots - one of each daughter in focus. I have just attached one of these shots. Should I have used a flash and would this have eliminated the problem of getting both girls in focus?

A flash would have allowed you to close down the aperature some and therefore increase your depth of field on what was in focus, also it would have enabled you to shot at a higher shutter speed. You would want to be able to have the flash off camera though to provide more interesting lighting. Not sure at what ISO the 40D starts to get too noisy but you could have set the ISO higher to close down the aperature a bit more. IMO I like the general lok and feel of this photo though.
