Default Playing with new camera

For years I have had a nice camera on my 'wishlist'. This Christmas my fiance got me the D90... love it! Just starting to play with it a bit.

This is of my son, on a sunny morning...

That is very good! The one thing I would say is next time move the plant in the background. One of the biggest things I have learned being here (i am new to photography also) is to always watch your background. When there is something in the background it tends to look like its growing out of the persons head. Now before I take a photo I always try to remember to check for any objects to move, or doors to close. You are gonna love your camera! I am enjoying every day with mine (I have the same story as you do!) And you will be bit by the bug and soon start buying all kinds of accessories! LOL!

Hehe bless him he is cute...Nice shot, by the way it is also helpful if you post the EXIF data of your picture so people can see your camera settings too. She is right to try another angle, out of distraction or adjust your aperture to give more focus on your subject and blur your background...Goodluck...Keep it up.

Cute! I'd love to see the EXIF, also.

A better angle would have been better for lighting. I see there's a window on the left side of the frame - if you'd had him facing more toward that window, the lighting would have been more even (there is some light in his right eye, but none in his left). Overall the focus is pretty soft, but it appears to have fallen on his left hand (the one closest to his body). If you can post your EXIF, that may clue us in as to why it's soft (perhaps too slow of a shutter speed?) Agreed with the others regarding the background - it's a bit distracting. Watch out for limb chops.

Using natural window light is wonderful for babies, so you're moving in the right direction! A reflector works wonders when using window light to even out light and soften shadows. In a pinch you can simply use a piece of white foam board from a craft shop. Try facing baby about 45 degrees to the window, and have the reflector about 45 degrees to the baby on the opposite side.

Keep shooting and posting. Congrats on the new camera!

I was actually just playing with it on it's auto settings. I have just now begun to read up on all of the other settings and haven't had much of a chance to play with them.

He actually was perched on his changing table that was right up against the window... would have been hard to turn him but I do get your drift! Look forward to practicing some more!
