Default 18 hours old and in need of protection!

My sister gave birth to my nephew on Saturday, and I went to see them in hospital. This is shot was not posed; I took it to show mum and dad protecting their new treasure.

EOS 500D, kit lens, 33mm
Exposure 1/20 s
Aperture f/4.5
ISO 400

Could the treatment be improved? E.g. by vignetting? Feel free to post your edits

Thanks

I love the pose in this picture!
Here's an edit that I did. I added a black and white adjustment layer, set it to soft light and then dialed down the opacity. I sharpened the photo but then realized I just loved the softness of your image.. so I deleted the sharpened layer
Then I added a slight vingnette.
I hope you light it!

Lovely photograph, Robin. It will be treasured, I'm sure.

Thanks for the comments so far ! It's currently my desktop wallpaper, and I'll soon be framing it. I'm moving to the US for 2 years, and will be putting it up on the wall when I get there!

Cinnamon_Girl- I really like the vignetting - it puts the b in subtle:P! Plus, it focuses the attention on the baby, so thanks!

I'm confused as to why you added a black and white adjustment filter though, since it's already black and white (but then I'm pretty new to this). I agree about the softness... the original is a bit sharper, but some of the detail was lost in the edit; I prefer it this way!

Thanks, but the vingette was your idea
I'm new to this too and there are probably better ways to go about what i was trying to do, but when I set the b/w layer to soft light, it made the photo "pop" a little more. It's very subtle but I thought it looked nice

Smile

So does the filter make it either black OR white? I think I can see how that might work

Hey, even though I suggested that a vignet might work, I like how you put it into practice
