Default construction site too blah?

modified 2240

We just moved into a neighborhood of new construction...there are still a lot of empty lots and dirt and rocks and heavy machinery...little to no grass. I let my 14 month old splash around after a rain...
I edited out the orange flags and other equipment to just leave dirt and puddles...But is the background of this photo still too blah?

Any suggestions on how to improve it or does it work?
Any critique welcome!

Agreed. Not into the selective coloring. That will probably make it look even more flat than with color.

Hi,
I actually rather like some selective colouring. There's something odd going on in my brain when I see a subject on the left and space on the right. What is that?.......Anyone?...Cute little girl, get rid of the 'blah' I think.

too bad she doesn't have a little umbrella and jumping in the puddle to give off some splash and bring life to the picture...

The selective coloring makes me feel like she was cut from something and pasted in there : /
