Waiting for Pappy

I recently purchased my first SLR: a Canon EOS Rebel T2i...Photography has always been a passion of mine, but I would like to turn it into a hobby. Is this photo any good from a technical standpoint? Composition? Lighting? Post Production? Any tips for a beginner?

This is a really good photo! I especially like the lighting and the high contrast. Keep up the good work!

The lighting and contrast are great and you've captured an interesting, slightly pensive expression with the subject on one side of the frame, looking out of the other. If there is a point of weakness, it is that the focus appears to be on her left hand and cuff. It would be better if it was soft overall all or if the focus were on her eyes and face. Focus elsewhere in an image can be effective if there is a reason for it but here it looks like your targetting was just a little way off.
